Biography: Charles Dallas Magaha was born in Loudon County, Virginia in1849 and came to Baltimore with his father, Samuel, some time in the early 1850's. he was Christened in Baltimore the same time Sam's and Agnes's first child and his older sister were Christened. They were Christened in St Peter's Church located at Hollins and Poppleton Sts in Baltimore. Charles enlisted in the Union Army under the assumed name of Joseph Magaha, why he did that is anybody's guess. He enlisted in the First Regiment Potomac Home Brigade . Most of the men in The Potomac Home Brigade were  recruited in Frederick City, Maryland, but Company C were recruited in Baltimore City. He enlisted February 26, 1865 and he then transfered to the 13th Maryland Inf. Co.B. he was discharged on May 29, 1865. After the war he met and married Kate Heffenor on August 18, 1870. According to the 1900 census Charles and Kate had 12 Children which 10 were still living. We have been able to research ten of them.In August of 1890 Charles applied for a veterans pension. On his pension application it says " That he is practially unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of weakness of the back and chronic dysentery."   The pension act of 1890 requires in case of a solider: 1) An honorable discharge. 2) a minimum service of ninety days. 3) A permanent physical disability not due to vicious habits 4) The rates under the act are graded from $6.00 to $12.00 proportioned to the degree of inability to earn a support, and are not affected by the rank held. 5) A pensioner under prior laws may apply under this one or a pensioner under this one may apply under other laws, but cannot draw more than one pension for the same period. Charles was granted a pension, but not sure how much. But we do know that he received a pension for $90.00 on July 1, 1927. Charles Dallas Magaha died on July 10, 1927, cause of death was Chronic Myocarditis and arterio scherosis with contributory cause cardiac dilatation. He was buried in Loudon Park cemetery on July 13, 1927.
