Biography: Charles was born May 25, 1943 the third child of
George Lloyd and Mary Aurelia (Yienger) Dorsey. He was baptized June 20, 1943 at
St Benedict Catholic Church, Baltimore, MD officiated by Father Aloyouis Luther.
His godparents were Mary Witt (aunt) and Lloyd E. Eaves (Reds) (cousin), Reds was
probably home on leave from WW II. He was raised in the southwest section of Baltimore
City and Catonsville Manor of Baltimore County. He attended St Benedict Grammar School,
Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School
and Catonsville Senior High School dropping
out at the completion of the tenth grade. He entered MarylandArmy National Guard as a part-time soldier enlisting in the 136th Evacuation Hospital. He spent
six months active duty from August 1960
until February 1961. In March 1961 he began work at Spring Grove State Hospital
and in September 1961 he went to work at Montgomery Wards warehouse. March 1962,
he enlisted in the US Army and was immediately sent to Germany
and
served with the 15th Medical Detachment
(Helicopter Ambulance) as a medic until June 1964. During this period he received
his GED and started taking some college courses. June 1964 he
went back to the states on emergency leave
due to illness of his mother and was reassigned to Kimborough Army Medical Hospital
at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland as a hospital corpsman working the pediatric
ward until March 1965 when he was honorably discharged.
Darlene, is the first of four children
of George and Catherine (Fanback) Ellis. She was raised in the Hamilton section
of Baltimore City. She attended St Dominic Parochial School on Harford Road of
Baltimore City. She went on to Seton High School and graduated in 1963. She has
done some college course work at Morgan State College.
Charles and Darlene were introduced by
Catherine (Dorsey) Singer a.k.a. Aurelia sometime in the later part of 1963. This
was not a physical introduction, but it was by US Mail. Charles was in the US Army
stationed in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. They did not meet in person until July of
1964 while Charles was home on emergency leave. They became engaged in August
1964. They married May 22, 1965, at Saint
Dominic..s Roman Catholic Church, on Harford Road of Baltimore City. Darlene was
employed at Social Security Administration and Charles was attending Baltimore
City Police Academy. Their first residence (apartment) was in the Academy
Heights section of Baltimore County. They
stayed at the location for approximately three years, during that time Charles
made an occupation change to Baltimore City Firefighter following in the foot steps
of his father, several uncles and cousins, while Darlene remained at SSA. Spring of
1968 they moved to an apartment in Catonsville
Manor where Gregory was conceived. December 1968, they purchased their first house
in the Hamilton section of Baltimore City. January 1969 they moved in with Grace
Yienger (Charles Aunt) while Charles did repairs to the house. March 13,1969 was
a joyous date in their marriage Gregory arrived. He was born in St Agnes Hospital
and three days later taken to Aunt Grace..s. Gregory was baptized St Dominic Roman
Catholic Church. Greg..s godparents are Darlene..s sister Janice (Ellis) Otten and Charles¶ brother Lloyd C. Dorsey. June 1969, the Dorsey..s moved to their Hamilton home. September 1969 Charles resigned from the Fire Department to do course work at University of Baltimore.
Darlene became the primary breadwinner
of the Dorsey Family, while still being employed at SSA. April 1970 Charles left
school and joined the ranks of Baltimore County Police Department until he retired
in 1987, all this time Darlene still employed at Social Security Administration. Sometime
in 1973 Charles and Darlene purchased approximately twelve acres of land in Westminster,
Carroll County, Maryland. In 1974 Darlene became pregnant it was a happy time all
were looking forward to the big event. Darlene had suspicion that she was pregnant with twins (multiple births are common in the Dorsey lineage). Darlene was admitted to St Agnes Hospital on April 23,1975 for observation, medical personnel were concerned about her pregnancy. Darlene..s suspicions were correct. She was notified that she was pregnant with twins. April 24, 1975 was a sad day for the Dorsey..s. Darlene delivered the twins (boy and girl) but there was
a
problem with the delivery and both infants
passed away. The twins were laid to rest on top of Charles.. mother grave at New
Cathedral Cemetery. August 1976, Charles was awarded an Associate of Arts Degree
from Essex Community College in Criminal Justice. Late spring of
1977 Darlene became pregnant again. The winter of 1977/1978 Darlene & Charles contracted with Fryfogle Construction to have a home built on the twelve acres in Westminster. February
15,1978, Eric Gerard appeared at St Agnes Hospital after three days he was taken
home. Eric
was baptized at St Thomas More Roman Catholic
Church, Baltimore, Maryland. Eric..s godparents are Darlene sister Cheryl Ellis
and Charles.. brother Robert A .Dorsey. July 27, 1979 the Dorsey..s moved to Westminster,
where they still reside. 1980 Charles enlisted into the
Maryland Army National Guard as a part-time
soldier. In 1987 Charles retired from the Baltimore County Police Dept. and joined
the full-time ranks of Maryland Army National Guard he remained there until 1988.
In 1988 he was employed by the City of Taneytown, MD as Chief of Police, that was
a short-lived position, as he rejoined the ranks of the Maryland Army National
Guard. May 2003, Charles retired from the
Maryland Army National Guard. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Baltimore (better late than never) a life long dream fulfilled. He presently works part-time driving for a limousine service. He also, has
become active with the Knights of Columbus, he joined in 1967. Darlene remained
with Social Security Administration and retired in 2001 with thirty-eight years
of faithful service. In retirement she volunteers in the community and church.
Gregory Lloyd Dorsey attended public and
parochial primary and middle school. He graduated from Calvert Hall High School
College in May 1987. May 1991 he graduated from Mount Saint M ary..s College Emmittsburg,
MD. Greg has been employed with the State of Maryland since 1992His interests are
aerobics and the theater. Greg is active in community and dinner theater.
Eric Gerard Dorsey attended St John Parochial
School, Westminster, M D. He graduated from Calvert Hall High School College in
May 1996. May 2000 he graduated from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA. Eric
is employed at Cardinal Gibbons High School, Baltimore MD as a teacher. His interests
are sports especially basketball which he has coached at the high school
level. He is presently the assistant basketball
coach for Cardinal Gibbons.
In retirement Darlene and Charles do extensive
traveling in and out of the United States.
